Seeed Studio has released an ESP32-powered Wi-Fi energy monitoring meter that can simultaneously measure the energy consumption of up to two devices and comes with Home Assistant integration so that users can remotely view the data captured.
This IoT energy monitor is powered by the XIAO ESP32C6. The ESP32-C6 microcontroller supports Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5 (LE), Thread, and Zigbee, making it a versatile choice for smart home applications. XIAO ESP32C6 features an on-board antenna with up to 80m range. Additionally, this energy monitor module includes a 2.81dBi 2.4GHz rod antenna for reliable communication.
The onboard microcontroller comes pre-flashed with ESPHome firmware, which enables Home Assistant compatibility. ESPHome allows you to program ESP32 using simple YAML configuration files, while Home Assistant can act as a central hub to monitor and control all smart home devices. Thanks to this integration, the energy monitor can store and display historical energy data for up to six months.
It is powered by the BL0939 IC, which features high-precision ADCs capable of simultaneously measuring two currents and one voltage. It comes with an RMS current range of 10mA to 35A. At 110V mains voltage, the monitor can track devices with power loads up to 3.85 kW, while in households with 220V AC, it can handle loads up to 7.7 kW.
The current measurement is done via a non-invasive alternating current transformer (SCT-013) that can easily clamp onto a current-carrying wire. These current transformers are rated for 100A with an accuracy of 1%.
